Free choice of hospital in list hospitals
Under basic insurance, you can in principle choose the hospital in which you wish to be treated. If you have to stay for one or more nights in a hospital, you are insured for the general ward. This means that you are in a shared room and are treated by the duty physician.
With regard to the free choice of hospital, the hospital must be a “list hospital”; this means a hospital that is on a cantonal hospital list. If you choose a list hospital outside of your canton of residence, basic insurance covers up to the costs that would have been incurred on a general ward of a list hospital in your canton of residence. You then cover any additional costs as a customer – unless you have taken out a supplementary hospital insurance policy or ÖKK START.
